Sodium peroxide

Chemical Formula: Na2O2

Synonyms

Description

Pale yellow solid or powder.

Uses

Sodium peroxide is used in laundry bleaches, as it reacts with water to make hydrogen peroxide, a bleaching agent. Besides hydrogen peroxide, the reaction makes sodium hydroxide (lye), which keeps the solution alkaline. Hot water and an alkaline solution are both needed in order for hydrogen peroxide to work best as a bleach.
